Kato Valsamonero or Varsamonero is a village and seat of the homonymous Community of the Municipality of Rethymno in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is 14 kilometers from Rethymno and is built at an altitude of 250 m.

South of the old Rethymno-Chania national road at the foot of the hill "Nipoi" with a view to the south and with a population of 223 residents, Kato Valsamonero is built. From the location of Sternes, a breathtaking landscape emerges before the eyes of the visitor: the Chania plain, the Cretan Sea, the White Mountains and Psiloritis. The village, which according to tradition is the oldest in Crete, was a center of resistance to the German occupation with the famous cave of Vasiles to the south of the settlement and the Ottoman earlier. The jewel of the village is the preserved church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos with frescoes that date the monument to the end of the 14th century. A part of the Virgin Mary in the center of the village is also preserved.

Kato Valsamonero is southwest of Rethymno just 15′ from the city.
