Gerani is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the Municipality of Rethymno in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete.
Gerani is located approximately 7.5 kilometers west of Rethymno and a short distance from the new Rethymno-Chania national road, at an altitude of 90 meters. It is located in a place covered with olive trees, although it is rocky, oaks and carob trees.
The village took its name from the "gerani" (a type of pump), from which the residents pumped water from the only well that existed. 
In the Gerani cave with its stalagmite decoration and 6 rooms, archaeological research, in addition to three human skeletons, also brought to light a multitude of bone and stone tools from the Neolithic era. Also found were important paleontological material that must have belonged to over a hundred endemic deer that must have died at the end of the Pleistocene epoch. The skeletons belonged to people who were probably trapped inside the cave, perhaps due to an earthquake.
The cave was discovered on 15-3-1969 during the opening of a bypass road of the new Rethymno-Chania national road. The cave has rich and delicate stalagmite decoration (stalactites, stalagmites, columns, corals) in its six chambers, but it is not generally open to the public.
